Sector overview

What we trade in urea.

Urea is the most heavily traded nitrogen fertilizer in the world, accounting for over half of global nitrogen consumption. It is produced by reacting ammonia with carbon dioxide and is sold as either prilled or granular product depending on end use.

Western Canada has substantial urea production capacity built on cheap, abundant natural gas. Major Canadian and US Gulf producers ship urea through Vancouver, Houston, and New Orleans to Asian, Latin American, and African fertilizer markets.

GMC Trading Group has standard trading capability for North American urea on counterparty request. The producer relationships and the Pacific and Gulf export logistics are well established.

Origins we source from

  • Alberta — Nutrien Redwater, Joffre
  • US Gulf — CF Industries, Koch Fertilizer
  • Western Canada — multiple producers

Why this trade right now

Global urea trade has been disrupted by Russian export controls, Iranian sanctions, and reduced Egyptian and Algerian production. Asian and African importers are actively diversifying supply away from politically-exposed origins. North American natural-gas-based urea is structurally cost-competitive and politically stable.

Typical destination markets

  • India and South Asia
  • Brazil and Latin America
  • Southeast Asia
  • Sub-Saharan Africa
