Sector overview

What we trade in granulated sulphur.

Sulphur is one of the most heavily traded industrial commodities in the world. Roughly half of global production goes into sulphuric acid for fertilizer manufacturing; the rest feeds chemical processing, lithium-ion battery cathode production, rubber vulcanization, and refining.

Canada is the world's second-largest sulphur exporter and the most logistically reliable Pacific source. The vast majority of Canadian sulphur is recovered as a byproduct from Alberta oil sands upgrading and sour gas processing — production is structurally stable and is not affected by Middle East supply disruption.

GMC Trading Group's active book is currently focused on granulated sulphur exports from Alberta and British Columbia origins to Asian counterparties via Pacific export terminals at Vancouver and Prince Rupert.

Origins we source from

  • Alberta — oil sands upgraders, sour gas plants
  • BC Lower Mainland — Pacific Coast Terminals (Port Moody)
  • Forming and granulation by Enersul, Heartland Sulphur, Keyera

Why this trade right now

Saudi and Emirati sulphur exports — historically the dominant lane to Asia — have been disrupted by regional conflict and Red Sea shipping risk. Asian chemical buyers and fertilizer manufacturers are actively seeking stable Pacific-route alternatives. Canadian product matches or exceeds GOST 9998 specifications and ships in approximately 22 days from Vancouver to major Chinese ports.

Typical destination markets

  • Greater China — Shanghai, Qingdao, Tianjin
  • Southeast Asia — Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand
  • South Asia — India, Pakistan, Bangladesh
  • MENA — UAE, Oman, Saudi Arabia (replacement supply)
