Sector overview

What we trade in potash (mop / sop).

Potassium chloride (muriate of potash, MOP) and potassium sulphate (sulphate of potash, SOP) are the two principal potassium fertilizers used globally. Potash is one of the three macronutrients essential to crop yield and is non-substitutable in industrial agriculture.

Saskatchewan, Canada is the largest potash producing region in the world, accounting for roughly one-third of global production. Canadian potash is mined by Nutrien, Mosaic, and BHP (Jansen project) and ships through dedicated rail networks to Vancouver and through US Gulf terminals.

GMC Trading Group has standard trading capability for Canadian-origin potash on counterparty request. We are not currently carrying an active potash book — but the producer-side relationships, the export logistics infrastructure, and the back-to-back L/C settlement model are identical to the sulphur trade lane.

Origins we source from

  • Saskatchewan — Nutrien (Cory, Allan, Vanscoy, Lanigan, Rocanville)
  • Saskatchewan — Mosaic (Belle Plaine, Colonsay, Esterhazy)
  • New Brunswick — historic underground operations

Why this trade right now

Canada's potash export position is structurally protected — Saskatchewan production has been the dominant global supply for fifty years. Asian and Latin American fertilizer markets rely on Canadian output. The most active arbitrage opportunities sit in markets where Russian and Belarusian potash exports have been disrupted by sanctions and shipping constraints.

Typical destination markets

  • Brazil and Latin America (largest export market for Canadian MOP)
  • Southeast Asia — Indonesia, Malaysia (palm oil sector demand)
  • India and South Asia
  • China
