Sector overview

What we trade in anhydrous ammonia.

Anhydrous ammonia is the foundational nitrogen building block — direct fertilizer use, urea production, and increasingly as a low-carbon shipping fuel and hydrogen carrier. Global ammonia trade is structurally tight as new low-carbon production capacity comes online.

Western Canada's natural-gas-based ammonia production is among the lowest-cost in the world. Producers ship refrigerated ammonia via specialized vessels from Vancouver and through US Gulf terminals to global markets.

GMC Trading Group has standard trading capability for North American anhydrous ammonia. Refrigerated ammonia trade requires specialized vessel chartering and additional inspection protocols, both of which are governed under the same back-to-back L/C structure as our other commodity trades.

Origins we source from

  • Alberta — Nutrien Redwater, Joffre, Carseland
  • US Gulf — CF Industries, OCI Beaumont
  • Sarnia and Eastern Canada

Why this trade right now

Asian and Latin American fertilizer manufacturers and emerging clean-fuel buyers are actively contracting North American ammonia supply. Trinidad and the FSU were historically dominant export sources; both have lost share to North American producers as natural gas economics have shifted.

Typical destination markets

  • India and Southeast Asia (fertilizer)
  • Latin America
  • Korea and Japan (clean fuel pilots)
